Issue 29: Week 9, Term 3 2024
Principal's Message - Karere a te Tumuaki
Kia ora koutou. I cannot begin this week's edition without reiterating my sentiments from my HERO post on Saturday evening and thanking our entire school community for another hugely successful Ag Day. If I'm ever asked about what makes our school so special, and how connected we are as a community, all I have to do is describe what I saw and felt here on Saturday. And I am so excited to say that through the immense efforts of everyone involved, and that incudes everyone who came along and spent their money so generously throughout the day, we were able to raise over $45,000!! This will go a long way to getting our 'Top Flat Turf Project' started.
I know I have mentioned this before, but I want to thank the following people one more time:
- Sarah Sutherland, Katey Pope, Kelly Hitchcock and Hayley Govorko - without your phenomenal coordination and drive behind the scenes and throughout the day, Ag Day wouldn't have been what it was.
- Our amazing Ag Day committee who have given so much of their time and effort - it doesn't go unnoticed. And that includes all the spouses and partners and kids and friends that you rope in to help and support us too.
- Lynne Fell and Debbie Withers who spent countless hours behind the scenes in the lead up, as well as all their hard work in the office on the day.
- Our amazing staff - you make Karaka School special and I feel proud to work with you all.
Now that the final things have been tidied up, collected, sent home and packed away, it is also a feeling of appreciation for the way in which our students have enjoyed celebrating each other's successes and helped their teachers get their classrooms back in order so that learning programmes can continue for the last two weeks of term.
A couple of reminders from me - please get any 'Beyond the Gate Bulletin' photos/blurbs to me by the end of the week if you have things to share and celebrate. If we don't have many updates, we'll hold off until mid Term 4 to post the next edition. Also, please note in your calendars that school is closed for instruction on Friday 25th of October (the Friday before Labour Weekend). KAS will be open for those who may need to utilise their child care services. And lastly, enjoy celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori this week. I love the theme for this year - 'Ake Ake Ake - A Forever Language'.
Ngā mihi nui

Celebrating Learning and Achievement
Last week, Elizabeth C represented Karaka School at the AIMS Games event (Association of Intermediate and Middle Schools) down in Mt Maunganui. Elizabeth qualified for 3 events at AIMS: 50m backstroke, 100m IM and 100m backstroke. She came 4th in her 100m IM heat and 8th in her 50m backstroke heat. She had a few girls pull out of her 100m backstroke heat so raced alone – the MC had the whole stadium cheering her on as he announced she was representing Karaka school (which we think is pretty awesome!). Elizabeth also achieved 3 Personal Bests for all her races, which both she and her family are very excited about. There were about 500 swimmers from across the country there. At the beginning of the year, Elizabeth made the goal of qualifying for at least one race – and we are extremely proud of where she has come in just one year. Ka pai Elizabeth.

Notes from the Office
Franklin Central Group Day
This year's Group Day will be at the A&P Grounds, Pukekohe on Wednesday 23rd October. Any child can enter Group Day with their lamb, calf or goat. They do not have to have won a ribbon or championship to be eligible to enter - it is open to any child.
Entry forms are available from the office - Entries close Friday 27th September. No late entries will be accepted.
Carpark Safety
Please remember if you park in the middle section of the carpark, to please walk your children via the central pedestrian pathway to the hall and along the path - please do not walk them behind the parked cars.
Also there is a No Parking area outside the bus entrance way (Yellow lines and No Parking Sign). We need room for the buses to swing in to enter the area.
