Issue 26: Week 6, Term 3 2024
Principal's Message - Karere a te Tumuaki
Kia ora and welcome to the Week 6 edition of the newsletter which also coincides with the last week of Winter. With the arrival of Spring this weekend, it's also a reminder of how close Ag Day will be upon us! Thank you those who have brought in all their groceries for the raffle items - those donations go a long way towards making up our amazing hampers.
Last night I sat down to write this newsletter piece knowing that I'd be heading down early today to see the Year 5&6 team at Lakewood Lodge Camp in Glen Murray for the night. I have to admit, the bag drop and loading of the bus wasn't ideal in the pouring rain yesterday, but as you can see from the photo attached, the rain gave way for them on their arrival and the photos on HERO look like they're having an awesome time so far. School sure seemed very quiet today with 70 of our students missing today.
No doubt many parents (particularly those with children in Years 5-8), will know a lot of time and effort has gone into the writing and presenting of speeches in the past few weeks. Before I acknowledge those who made it into our school speech finals, I want to make a special mention of Elizabeth C (Year 7) who represented Karaka at the Franklin Pasifika Speech Competition last Thursday. Elizabeth came first place in the Fijian Bilingual competition and we are extremely proud of her accomplishment.
Our own school speech finals were held on Monday and I was extremely grateful I didn't have to judge them this year - the calibre was extremely high. I want to congratulate the following students for even making it to the finals as this really is an awesome achievement:
Year 5&6 - Georgia B, Hazel G, Ruhaani S, James R, Charlotte T and Jack A
Year 7&8 - Lucy E, Max N, Tom P, Ella H, Devan C, Aliyah M and Josie H
A special congratulations to our winners, Jack A and Ella H, who will go on to represent Karaka at the Hunua Principals Cluster Finals on Tuesday next week here at Karaka. And to our Runner Up in each section, Hazel G and Tom P. You should be really proud.
Below, you will see our 2024/2025 Strategic Plan attached for your reference. While this is a key document that drives a lot of what goes on here at school, I realise it is just as important to keep it at the forefront of what we are sharing with our community. At the end of this term, I'll share a brief update about our actions to date and where we are at as we head into the final term for 2024.
We will end this week acknowledging Daffodil Day along with the rest of NZ. I know I'll be wearing yellow to school to support this important cause that affects so many of us, and I encourage as many of you as possible to do the same. Until then, ka kite and have a wonderful week.
